Visit to HSR

October 31 2010, by Simon Krenger

Yesterday I visited the HSR (University of Applied Sciences in Rapperswil) and looked into the Computer Science laboratories.

I can surely say that my expectations were met and I liked what I saw. There are two departments in the Computer Science studies:

  • Software Engineering
  • Computer Networks

Since I am not really a programmer myself, the Computer Networks department was more interesting for me. The HSR provides their students with the possibility to learn on Cisco network environment and also get the CCNA certificate while studying. The professors seem to have a sympathetic style and attitude. Also, the campus is located next to the lake Zurich, embedded in mountains. There is also the possibility to study 60% percent of the week and also work 40%.

However, all these points fail to convince me to study at the HSR. Mainly because it is located in Zurich, which is on the other side of the country. Well – and I like to be around Bern and there are not enough reasons to move to Zurich.

In Bern, the BFH also offers studies in Information Technology, although in different departments such as IT Security and Web and Business Applications. Since I am interested in database concepts and the related fields, this might be the better choice.
